Pair Chocolate Spot Fungicide Spray with Nutrition

By: Natalie Wood

Whilst some have seen slight respite from the wet conditions recently, there have been knock-on effects of the prolonged wet conditions that we have seen so far this year.

Winter beans, in particular, have suffered with higher incidences of chocolate spot. This is due to extended periods where moisture has been sat on the leaf surface, with no dry spells to remove it, creating a perfect climate for spread of the disease.

Whilst nutrition won’t reduce the level of disease pressure on the crop or recover existing necrotic damage that has already occurred, it can be mixed with planned fungicide applications.

Spring is a critical period for winter beans as the crop shifts from overwintering into rapid vegetative growth and early reproductive development. Micronutrient availability during this phase directly influences canopy development, photosynthetic efficiency, nodule performance, stress resilience and grain quality. Key nutrients for legumes at the early spring timing would be sulphur, magnesium and manganese but also molybdenum, boron and zinc have important roles in flowering later in the life cycle.

Yara developed a crop-specific product ideal for legumes which contains all these nutrients. YaraVita Photrel Pro is a fully soluble powder, which allows for higher concentrations of nutrients within the product. Due to the higher concentrations, we can have lower application rates, for winter beans it would be 3kg/ha, applied at the fungicide timing. The product mixes well with other ag-chem products but always best to check Tankmix app or YaraPlus app to be sure.
