Micronutrients give oilseed a better chance

By: Natalie Wood

Getting oilseed rape established quickly is key in the fight against autumn pests and diseases. Placing a starter fertiliser can make a huge difference to getting that crop off to a good start but micronutrients also have an important part to play.

There is wide variation across the country on when people were able to drill their oilseed this year, some crops are already getting too large where others are only at cotyledon stage. Micronutrients play an important role even at either end of this spectrum. Large plants that haven’t had any foliar micronutrients applied may be struggling to get sufficient nutrition from the soil, having depleted the reserves. Small plants will need all the help they can get to overcome pests and grow sufficiently before the winter now that temperatures are starting to drop.

YaraVita Brassitrel Pro is a crop specific combination of several nutrients that are important for oilseed. This product takes preventative action and should be applied in the autumn to ensure that the crop isn’t deficient during that period early growth.

An extra £133 per hectare in yield

Recent Yara trial data from the 2017 harvest has shown an average yield benefit of 0.41t/ha from an application of YaraVita Brassitrel Pro in the autumn and the spring. At Ex farm prices of £325/t this yield benefit would give you an extra £133/ha.
