The key foliar fertilisers for cereals are magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc. A shortage of magnesium reduces the efficiency of leaves by restricting chlorophyll production; copper and zinc deficiencies can make it harder for a plant to fight off yellow rust or mildew by hindering production of key enzymes; manganese deficiency prevents plants using nitrogen efficiently causing an accumulation of nitrate in leaf tissues, which in turn makes plants more susceptible to diseases. All of these in turn will lead to a less efficient plant with a smaller root system which will then be less able to take up other nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphate and potash leading to restricted growth.
Recent analyses conducted by Yara Analytical Services found 44% of soils were below the guideline level of manganese for wheat and of these almost half were also deficient in magnesium, copper or zinc too.
So it makes sense to apply a product which combines all of these foliar fertilisers for cereals to ensure none of these are restricting the crop.
This approach has been justified by independently conducted trials over the last four seasons, most recently in 2016, where an autumn application of YaraVita Gramitrel at 3 l/ha to winter wheat gave an extra yield 0.34 t/ha.
