Copper enables pollen release which increases fertilisation and reduces the number of blind grain sites; therefore is a key nutrient for grain number development. Copper is also an important part of plant structure and can help to reduce lodging as it promotes lignification. Zinc also plays a role here as optimum zinc promotes auxin levels, aiding canopy development. This can also result in increased grain number and size.
When keeping the canopy greener for longer (in order to increase yields through prolonged light interception) magnesium, manganese and zinc all play key roles in chlorophyll production and therefore photosynthesis.
Once you can see the symptoms of deficiencies it means that damage is already being done and the plant is not working at top efficiency. To know whether you have a deficiency before you see the signs, carry out a tissue test. Take a representative sample of the newest fully-emerged leaves from across the whole field and send to the lab, such as Yara Analytical Services, for analysis. You will be sent guidelines of which nutrients the crop is lacking and can adjust with a foliar application accordingly.
Multi-Foliar Fertiliser products can also be used such as YaraVita GRAMITREL at 1-3l/ha in with the T1 spray.
