Grass production data shows that the highest producing farms have little variation between paddocks and the number of grazings from each paddock is a key driver of success. It is worth identifying poorer performing paddocks, not just for overall yield but also for their growth pattern.
Reseeding isn’t always the only solution, other factors such as poor soil fertility and compaction will impede grass performance. But, poor performing paddocks often have an issue with poor sward quality as a result of poor soil fertility which in turn has led to the more productive grass species dying out.
Farmers are reluctant to reseed due to the cost and short term reduction in grazing area. It might seem an expensive business to reseed, but the resulting extra production can make the costs worth it.
Push the boat out and try to reseed as early as possible this spring, by doing so you will have your first grazing earlier and will maximise the number of grazings in year 1.
