Yara is well-prepared for the EU’s REACH regulation, which requires extensive testing, evaluation and registration of chemicals to safeguard human health and the environment.
The EU Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) came into force on June 1, 2007. Besides testing and registration of chemicals, REACH increases demand for exchange of information among suppliers, customers, producers, importers and authorities.
Yara had been preparing for this regulation for several years. Based on a review of the product portfolio and an inventory of all products and suppliers, we have completed pre-registrations covering all our businesses considered to be affected by REACH. All relevant manufactured substances and critical imported substances have been pre-registered. To ensure availability of current products during the phase-in of REACH, we are also communicating with suppliers to ascertain that raw materials and other substances supplied to our operations are in compliance with REACH.
More work is underway to ensure compliance with the registration requirements in 2010 and to produce safety reports and exposure scenarios for products to which this applies. Yara is cooperating closely with suppliers, customers and the industry to carry out the extensive testing and documentation.
The principles of products stewardship along with HACCP studies and compliance with the REACH regulation provide Yara with confidence that its plant nutrient products satisfy society’s requirement for safe food production, contributing to human health.
