Nitric acid

Nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent

Production

Nitric Acid is produced by catalytic oxidation of ammonia to produce a nitrogen oxide which is absorbed into water to produce weak nitric acid (WNA) which can be distilled to produce more concentrated grades. Nitric acid is a clear yellowish liquid with a pungent odour. Stronger nitric acids fume on contact with the air.

Supply

Concentrations of up to 68 percent can be produced by conventional distillations. Production of more concentrated nitric acid is possible by special techniques, all of which are mastered by Yara as a leading nitric acid manufacturer.

Application

Nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent and many of its applications in the industrial chemical and fine chemical industries are based on this property.Besides the chemical industry, nitric acid finds uses in the food processing, metal processing, rubber, civil explosives, pharmaceutical, space, food and dairy industries.
