Carbon Dioxide (CO2) can exist in 4 different phases, gas, liquid, solid (Dry Ice) and supercritical dependant upon temperature and pressure.
Supercritical Carbon Dioxide is CO2 in a fluid state whilst at or above both its critical temperature and pressure. This state behaves both as a liquid and a gas at the same time and possesses some unusual properties and characteristics.
Supercritical Carbon Dioxide has found many industrial applications due to its green credentials when compared to CFC's (primarily based on its solvent characteristics) including;
* Coffee and tea caffeine extraction
* Essential oil and plant aromatic extraction
* Flouropoylmer synthesis
* Dry Cleaning
Recent research includes using supercritical carbon dioxide in high efficiency turbine generators for power generation.
