The Chafer liquid fertilizer placement technique is now widely accepted as best practice by the UKs leading growers. A controlled supply of nutrient produces both increases in saleable yield and a more even sample size.
The benefits of placing nutrients below the soil surface into the moist root zone, in terms of yield increases and efficiency of fertilizer usage have been consistently demonstrated in two decades of commercial trials..
The superiority of the placement technique, as the name suggests, derives from the ability to place fertilizer precisely where required for the most effective uptake by the potato root system. The availability of nitrogen, phosphate and potash is maintained even in dry periods when the lack of soil moisture may prevent broadcast fertilizer from being effectively utilised.
With broadcast fertilizer applications a proportion of the water soluble phosphate is rendered unavailable by soil fixation (phosphate lock-up). The placement technique significantly enhances the availability of water soluble phosphate by reducing the level of phosphate/soil contact.
